Johannesburg's premiere civic theatre may not be the West End but it is an internationally recognised venue for global touring theatrical productions. Gain some culture by attending one of the world class shows, attend dance workshops or join friends for dinner in one of the many eateries. During the day the theatre is a community meeting place in a retail environment and at night the shows captivate audiences. The Civic Theatre features high tech staging facilities managed by the technical expertise of the stage crew which brings productions to life. The main stage includes five computer-controlled stage lifts which can be raised to 3.9m above stage level and five stage wagons facilitate the movement of sets across the stage while the audience is enthralled by the performance.
There is also an adjustable proscenium and extensive sound and lighting options in the main auditorium, aptly named the Nelson Mandela Theatre, which has a seating capacity of 1069. The Tesson Theatre seats 251 people and Peoples Theatre has 176 seats for fringe shows and smaller productions which are just as popular as the main shows, but draw more specialised audiences. T he productions are an opportunity for South African performers, musicians, writers, creative directors, designers and technicians to develop their skills on a sponsored basis in order to create commercially viable and exploitable stage productions. The complex is a five-star facility for private dining, corporate functions, business meetings, office parties and trade launches. These facilities make a trip to the Civic Theatre a perfect night out on the town.
