The Houghton golf course is at an altitude of 6434m,its one of the longest in the Joburg area but it still remains fairly challenging. The course is thickly treed with blue gums and jacarandas trees.
The holes are long and demand accuracy as the rough and semi-rough is dangerously thick on fairways that constantly rise and fall. It feels like the ball sticks in the long kikuyu grass and you'll need strong wrists to get it free. Greens are slick and fast with well-positioned bunkers that will challenge any short game.
The course has several dams and water hazards come into play on nine of the 18 holes.
The signature hole is the par3 sixth. Accuracy off the tee is important, as you'll have to negotiate a raised narrow green, protected by two large bunkers on both sides and bushes behind. Houghton Golf Course has hosted several tournaments including the annual Alfred Dunhill Championship. It is rated in the top ten courses of SA and is a proclaimed bird sanctuary.
