Join us on a half-day tour of aTraditional South African Township Life, Culture and Music:

tart the morning with a tour of Soweto, South Africa’s most famous township. Our tour starts as we drive past the largest Hospital in the Southern Hemisphere, the Chris Hani

Baragwanath Hospital, the taxi ranks, side- walk stalls and muti shops of the traditional

Healers.

We continue onto a squatter camp (informal settlement) where you will have a chance to buy arts and crafts of the local people and also take a tour of the squatter camp with a local guide.

We continue past Vista University and onto FREEDOM SQUARE, Kliptown. Today this Famous space shows signs of the momentous events that occurred here in the mid-1950’s.

Another part of the strategy the resistance leadership devised was the creation of a ‘People’s Bill of Rights’. This is a very famous document and became known as the Freedom Charter. Kliptown Soweto was the place chosen for a large public meeting in 1955 during which the contents of the document would be finalized and agreed upon.

The tour includes a visit to the OPPENHEIMER TOWER – popular tourist attraction offering a unique vantage point from where most of Soweto can be viewed. Built from the ruins of

The old Sophiatown, the tower is set in unusual gardens. Then a guided tour of Credo Mutwa’s cultural village of African mythical sculptures.

Then on to the HECTOR PETERSON memorial, a museum dedicated to a young boy who was the first fatality in the June 1976 uprisings, for an informative visit and insight into the riots.

Stand on the only road that carries the honour of two of the recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize. Drop in at NELSON MANDELA’S home – one of the most visited sights in the country, being the tiny, four roomed “matchbox” house where the young lawyer lived with his wife and small children during the 1950’s We then visit a typical shebeen restaurant for lunch

(R80,00 optional) or refreshments, for the real cultural experience.

Some three houses away from Mandela’s home, one comes across a house with a high blue wall, this is the home of BISHOP TUTU, known Internationally as a stalwart anti-apartheid cleric.

Also see the home of WINNIE MADIKEZELA MANDELA.

We continue to the REGINA MUNDI CHURCH with it’s black Madonna, for a guided tour. Regina Mundi, one of 18 Catholic churches in Soweto, is another one of the townships “must

see” sites. Built in 1962, this is the largest Catholic church in South Africa.

But this is only a portion of your tour. On your return journey, your experienced tour guide will drive through the most affluent suburbs with it’s beautiful homes.

Return to your hotel via Johannesburg City.
