Going on an African Safari was a dream come true for me. Since I was living the World Cup Dream in Africa anyway, I decided to fulfill another. It was last minute when I tried to find a safari package that fit into my schedule, and after several failed attempts on my part, Accommodation Direct found the perfect match for me.
The first day included a night drive in which a few animals were spotted using lights as we traveled in open sided vehicles under an amazing array of stars that filled the African sky. After returning to the lodge, we were treated to an amazing dinner, which we enjoyed as we sat around an open fire. I had special dietary requests that were accommodated with creativity and enthusiasm.
Day two was spent searching the grounds of Kruger Park from well maintained open vehicles for the exotic animals we were there to see. The search was quickly and frequently rewarded with sightings of lions, hippos, rhinos, gibbons, impalas, giraffes and on, and on, and on. Our guide for the day, Oscar grew up around the edge of the park and knew how to make the search successful. The evening ended back at the lodge for another exceptional dining experience.
Day three started with a early knock on the door, which I had arranged since I had failed to bring an alarm. The early start was rewarded with a bush walk that examined the smaller world of incredible African wildlife and plants. The guide was so entertaining and informative that I wish that it had lasted much longer than time allowed.
Everything on this adventure was better than expected except for the transportation. Due to what I assume was an unprecedented amount of travelers, the organizers hired inexperienced drivers to provide transportation from JoBurg and back. The original pick-up at my hotel was late making for a rushed trip to the safari site. It seems that the driver was not familiar enough with the area to find my location. Other than having to sit and wait for about four hours, the delay was tolerable. Then, on the final day, the itinerary called for a visit to the Blyde River Canyon and the Three Rondawels as we returned to Johannesburg. The driver that was to take us had no clue. Even after a couple of cell phone calls with instructions we were not taken to those sights.
Although we missed a part of the package that was presented at the time of booking, the rest of the experience more than made up for the error. I would do it all again and would recommend this package to anyone traveling in the area on time and budget constraints.
