Just over an hour's drive from Pretoria or Johannesburg, tucked away on the northernmost slope of the Magaliesberg range, is an exceptional wildlife centre. Here, in a rugged indigenous-bush setting, rare southern African wildlife species - many seldom seen in game reserves - can be viewed.
De Wildt is renowned internationally for its success in breeding rare and endangered southern African animal species. A major achievement has been the breeding of the King Cheetah, and the Centre offers visitors a unique viewing (and photographic) experience. Other notable breeding programmes involve the normal spotted cheetah, African wild dog, brown hyaena and various vulture/griffon species.
A 3-hour tour is conducted in an open vehicle during which informative commentary is provided by a knowledgeable guide and visitors are afforded close-up sightings of rare wildlife. Another exhilarating experience (especially for photographers) awaits those who attend an early-morning lure chase by the cheetah, the fastest animal on earth.
