Vanderbijlpark
Vanderbijlpark is one of Gauteng’s biggest and most important industrial towns and is in fact home to the largest steelworks in the entire southern hemisphere. South of the economic hub of Johannesburg and located along the banks of the Vaal River, Vanderbijlpark has been in existence since the booming gold rush swept through the entire area in the late 1800s. Though many of the towns in the Vaal Triangle including the likes of Sasolburg, Vereeniging, and Meyerton, emerged purely because of the discovery of gold, Vanderbijlpark was established as a city to house the employees of ISCOR steelworks, which began operating in 1947. Today the largest heavy engineering works in the southern hemisphere is run by Vanderbijlpark Steelworks.
But unsurprisingly, it is not all about steelworks or gold here in Vanderbijlpark; the town is known just as much for its dedication to recreational activities and when it comes to recreation, the Vaal River immediately comes into the equation. Water sports are very popular pastimes in these parts where it is not unusual to find a rowing regatta taking place or a boating cruise. In fact, one of the best things to do during a visit to Vanderbijlpark is to cruise the river on the Liquid Lounge boat; it’s a fun-filled experience where the beauty and picturesque scenery of the surrounding area is very evident.

The Emerald Casino Resort is undoubtedly popular particularly for its entertainment outlets and gaming experience, while the likes of the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve and Marievale Bird Sanctuary are terrific destinations for ardent nature lovers.
