About Sterkfontein Nature Reserve
browse (1 / 3)

If its one thing South Africa is internationally famous for, it is for its startling natural beauty. Indeed, the Republic is blessed with many terrific reserves and parks that highlight the breadth and depth of not just the scenic delights the country has been blessed with, but also its splendid array of flowers as well as abundant wildlife and bird species. The Sterkfontein Dam Reserve is one of those destinations that offers all of this and more. Situated in the Free State province and surrounded by the towns of Clarens, Bethlehem, and Harrismith, the Sterkfontein Dam Reserve covers a staggering 18000 Ha.

The Sterkfontein Dam Reserve is one of South Africa’s most special locations. The crystal-clear lakes that are splattered around the landscape are absolutely breathtaking at first glance and even more scintillating when viewed from the road that travels above the reserve. But this is just the start of a riveting excursion. The lakes are framed by a fertile grassy blanket and are further surrounded by an undulating kaleidoscope of rugged hills, vegetation kloofs, and supreme mountain peaks. Its Mother Nature at its absolute best – unspoilt, glorious, and majestic.

The Sterkfontein Dam Reserve teems with wildlife, birds and plant types. Visitors lucky enough to explore this hallowed terrain can see the Oribi, Grey Rhebuck, and Mountain Reedbuck saunter through the reserve, as well as the likes of the Bearded and Cape Vultures, Cape Rock Thrush, Ground Woodpecker, Black and Martial Eagles, and the Sentinel all perched on mountainous rocky outcrops. Additionally, the Sterkfontein Dam Reserve is a resplendent haven for flowers, trees, and different types of grass and moss such as Yellowwood, Silky Bark, Wild Peach, and the Koko Tree.
