North west Province
With Gauteng, the Western Cape, and Kwa-Zulu Natal always taking centre stage within the country of South Africa, the likes of the North West province often get overlooked. But what many people outside of South Africa might not know, the North West province is actually home to a myriad of the Rainbow Nation’s most famous attractions. The glamourous gaming paradise of Sun City and its sister affiliate the Lost City are both located within in the North West, while other must-visit destinations includes the glorious Pilanesberg National Park and the history-laden town of Mafikeng.
Without a doubt, Sun City is the pick of the crop when it comes to popularity. What’s not to love about Sun City? It’s the ultimate gaming experience found anywhere in Africa and offers a magnificent assortment of world-class hotels and restaurants on top of that. Its sister city the Lost City is renowned for its fabulous recreational facilities with the ‘Valley of the Waves’ being one of the biggest draw cards amongst patrons. Of course, Sun City isn’t the only place to be when visiting the North West – the Pilanesberg is one of South Africa’s greatest natural spectacles. The Pilanesberg National Park is home to the crater of a long extinct volcano while the Pilanesberg Nature Reserve offers visitors the best in game viewing including the Big 5.
For those that want to soak up the essence of the North West province and be away from the crowds and noise, then a visit to the likes of Mafikeng is ideal. Mafikeng has a terrific museum showcasing the indigenous Bushman tribe as well as the fascinating ‘Siege of Mafikeng’. History buffs will love Mafikeng as well as the other historical towns of Potchefstroom, Lichtenburg, and Klerksdorp.
