Mokopane
The province of Limpopo is not one of South Africa’s most well known destinations and a lot of the time it is overshadowed by the heavyweights of the Western Cape, Gauteng, and KZN. But in its own way Limpopo has just as much to offer travellers from abroad as well as in the country itself. Its attractive location means that it has easy access to the likes of Gauteng, which has its focal point in the city of Johannesburg, and the iconic Kruger National Park, which is situated in the province of Mpumalanga.
Besides its geographical benefits, Limpopo is also beautiful and an important mining and agricultural centre; this is none more evident than in Mokopane, the city formerly known as Potgietersrus. Indeed Mokopane is one of South Africa’s richest agricultural producers as the likes of wheat, beef, cotton, maize, citrus fruits, and peanuts are produced here; the Zebedelia farm which is 55km to the south east is one of the largest producing citrus farms in the southern hemisphere. Mokopane is also home to many exotic and indigenous wildlife parks and supports conservation in a big way; one of the more prominent examples of this is the Potgietersrus Nature Reserve, which is a game breeding area and is maintained by the National Zoological Gardens.
Another exciting attraction in Mokopane is the Arend Dieperink Museum, which boasts an extensive cultural-historical collection of Sotho and Voortrekker artefacts. Some other places of interest to visit include Mapakansgat Valley, which is known for its breathtaking beauty and numerous caves that have fossils dating back as far as 3.3 million years ago, and the Waterberg Mountains, which has become a tourist destination of note in recent times.
