Melrose
Johannesburg first became known as the ‘City of Gold’ in the 1880s during the first gold rush and since then it has boomed rapidly to become the commercial and economic hub of South Africa. This special city is infused with numerous African influences and rings with passion, vibrancy, and energy. Visitors here have subsequently fallen in love with Jozi and are constantly treated to a fine array of tourist attractions that have become excellent in their own right. Top spots to frequent include the Montecasino complex, Gallagher Estate in Midrand, the Johannesburg Royal Country Club, Nelson Mandela Bridge, and Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens.
The suburb of Melrose is one of Johannesburg’s finest areas. From a small unassuming town used mainly for residential purposes, Melrose has started expanding in recent years and now includes a commercial sector that is both thriving and continuously developing. The streets of Melrose are tree-lined and picturesque filled with internationally branded car dealerships and wonderful gourmet coffee shops that create a very chic atmosphere. Unlike some of the busier areas of Jozi, Melrose lends itself more to nature and this is very evident at the Melrose Wild Bird Sanctuary where visitors can view more than 120 species of birds and indigenous trees and reed beds that frame the shimmering lake in the middle of the sanctuary.
For those who want to do some serious retail exercise, the iconic Sandton City is not very far and promises shopaholics the shopping experience of a lifetime. Sports fans are looked after too with the likes of the Wanderers Cricket Ground and Wanderers Golf Course both in close proximity.
