South Africa has become known for its breathtaking natural spectacles and is indeed blessed with awe-inspiring scenery as well as abundant wildlife, marine life, bird life, and plant life. The province of Limpopo, while not as well known as the likes of KZN, the Western Cape, or Gauteng, has recently gained prominence because of its peaceful ambience and rugged unspoilt terrain.
Limpopo has a pretty good location too as it gives travellers easy access to the likes of Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and KZN. The Marakele National Park, one of Limpopo’s best attractions, is situated in the heart of the Waterberg Mountains. It’s tranquil and laidback energy has often been attributed to its geographical location, which places it in a transitory area between the moist eastern and dry western zones of South Africa. Marakele National Park is a wonderful kaleidoscope of hills, plains, mountain terrain, and deep valleys, giving further credence to South Africa’s reputation as an amazingly beautiful country.
The park has many rare tree species including the likes of yellowwood, high cycads, and tree ferns, while visitors can look forward to some serious game viewing, which includes the spotted hyena, white rhino, lion, buffalo, leopard, and elephant. Other wildlife comes in the forms of the Chacma Baboon and Vervet Monkey who are known to be quite mischievous around the camp sites. The bird watching opportunities at Marakele are quite special too, as it is the home of the world’s largest colony of endangered Cape Vultures, while other species to watch include the Jackal Buzzard, Black Eagle, and the African Hawk.
