While Gauteng may not be known for its natural appeal as the Western Cape and other regions of South Africa might be, it is still a wonderful destination for travellers especially those who like life to be fast-paced and all action. Johannesburg in particular has a buzzing atmosphere that makes it irresistible to all that find their way to her city. There are many popular attractions in the province for visitors to enjoy with the likes of Montecasino, Gold Reef City, Sandton City, and the Nelson Mandela Bridge being sought-after sites.
The majestic and imposing terrain of the Magaliesberg Mountains is one of Gauteng and South Africa’s top attractions. Stretching nearly 120km and separating the savannah bushveld of the north and grasslands of the south, the Magaliesberg range is 100 times older than Everest and extends from Rustenburg in the east to Bronkhorstspruit Dam in the west. The mountain has had human occupation dating back to 2 million years ago, with explorers such as David Livingstone scaling it to study the indigenous tribes. The human occupation gradually led to the finding of the Sterkfontein Caves and other various fossils.
Today the Magaliesberg hosts scores of tourists all drawn to her amazing beauty and panoramic surrounds. The town of Magaliesburg is home to various accommodations ranging from luxurious to backpacker, with popular activities centering on rock climbing, hiking, and abseiling. The Magaliesberg also has the added advantage of being a central location as it has easy access to both Jo’burg and Pretoria.
