Irene
Visitors to South Africa are often blown away by the diversity and multiculturalism of the people and places; this is none more evident than in the province of Gauteng, which could aptly be called the pulse of the Rainbow Nation. Indeed, Gauteng was the scene of the first gold rush in the 1800s and since then it has developed and grown at a rapid rate, making it the premier of South Africa’s nine provinces. The focal point of Gauteng is undoubtedly its ‘City of Gold’ – Johannesburg.
Johannesburg is the country’s economic and commercial hub, with its streets alive and vibrant with different African influences. Just north of Jo’burg, the nation’s capital Pretoria can be found. Pretoria is less congested and more relaxed, but is a gem in its own way. With its jacaranda-lined streets and majestic Union Buildings, Pretoria has become a definite favourite amongst visitors. Approximately halfway between these two fine cities is the almost out of place country suburb of Irene (pronounced Irenie by the locals). Irene is a true rural paradise and its tempo is so laidback and charming that visitors would be hard-pressed not to fall in love with it.
The focal point of Irene is the Irene Dairy Village, where cows roam about unhindered and unbothered on lush terrain through the road of the village. The dairy farm’s coffee shop serves the most delicious assortment of treats, ranging from freshly brewed coffees and teas, to breakfasts and dinners. As if that is not enough, its bakery has a wonderful selection of cheese, farm milk and other yummy goodies. Though Irene is private and peaceful, it is in close proximity to many of Pretoria’s entertainment outlets, ensuring that visitors can have the best of both worlds.
