The accommodation at Bokmakierie B&B includes three double expansive rooms with en suite showers. Each room has a unique colour code, and is stacked with crisp white bed linen and towels. You are offered secure off-road parking with the convenience of a separate guest entrance.
The entrance leads into a long, broad passage which is painted gousblom yellow perfectly offset by original mud plaster. Peter’s naove art graces these walls, and you will see the real life inspirations for the characters in his paintings – his trademark dogs. You will also encounter long-necked camels inspired by the Owl House in Nieu Bethesda, and the famed “parrotmen”.
The lounge, dining room and lobby area are exquisitely designed, with high pressed steel ceilings and shining polished floors with Oregon boards throughout. Ceiling fans cool you down in the hot summer, and you can warm yourself with red wine by our Esse stove if you arrive in the winter. The lounge features a cheerful fireplace, and welcoming hot-water bottles await you in your bed during winter.
With over 25 years’ worth of experience in South Africa as well as Namibia, we offer our guests invaluable advice and knowledge about intriguing routes to explore and what to discover along the way. Enjoy a sumptuous breakfast and then set off to discover Free State hospitality in your own unique way!
Smithfield, the third oldest town in the Free State, offers limitless features of interest for history aficionados, including the Caledon River Museum and the historical cemetery. In the latter you will find the grave of Rose Roberts, an Irish woman, with the gravestone featuring a harp and shamrocks. Explore the urban myth of this Irish woman who died far from home in 1878.
Bokmakierie Bed & Breakfast also offers many exciting activities, including golf, tennis and bowls on the exquisite bowling green. The golf course, which has been featured on Pitch and Putter, completed a century last year, and features the added delight of costing only a marginal amount when compared to the greens in urban areas. You can also refresh yourself with walks along the trail up the koppie, with many delightful things to watch out for along the way – evocative rock art, Boer War graffiti and native fauna and flora.
Birdwatchers can look out for the gymnogenes that are prolific in the village, or the bashful Bokmakierie whose cry can often be heard early in the morning. Also worth a visit is the local farm, where sheep’s milk is used to produce traditional cheeses which are supplied to Woolworths. We arrange farm visits upon request, so don’t miss this bona fide delight!
