Benoni are situated only 10 minutes from Johannesburg International Airport and about 30km from Johannesburg CBD along the N17. The name of the suburb Benoni has a biblical reference, it is metioned in Genesis, Ben-Oni or "son of my sorrow". It was called Benoni because the surveyor of the piece of land, whose name was Johan Rissik, struggled to do the land survey. Gold was discovered on the piece of land in 1887 then Benoni was declared a gold bearing farm. The very first residential stands were sold in 1904 and Benoni is today a centre of manufacturing and heavy industry.

Visitors to Benoni can appreciate a bit of the culture and learn some of the history of the town at the Benoni Museum. One of the St Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church windows is of particular interest. On close inspection, the window appears to be a stain that has a very close resemblance of the Crucifixion.

There are five man-made lakes in Benoni (hence it is also known as the “City of Lakes” and more than 30 parks. One of these, the Korsman Bird Sanctuary, houses about 250 species, and a few antelope.

Children can enjoy great entertainment at the Bunny Park, where they can freely play with hundreds of bunnies and sheep, as well as listen to birds in the trees. The Benoni Lake Express is a funfilled vintage steam train ride which takes passengers from the Johannesburg Station to the Northmead Station right next to Danie Taljaard Park. The park is a great picnic spot. Visitors can enjoy the superb shopping centres and a monthly flea market for all types of arts and crafts.
